Big Win for Australian Small Businesses!
The Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Reform No. 2) Act 2026 is now law, delivering two major tax benefits for businesses across Australia
- Loss Carry-Back Tax Offset Eligible companies with annual global turnover under $1 billion can now carry back current-year tax losses and offset them against tax paid in the previous two income years, improving cash flow during challenging periods.
- Permanent $20,000 Instant Asset Write-Off Small businesses with turnover under $10 million can continue to immediately deduct eligible business assets costing less than $20,000, providing certainty and encouraging investment.
These measures are designed to support business growth, boost investment, and strengthen financial resilience for Australian businesses.

Getting ready to lodge your tax return?
Having the right documents ready can make your tax appointment smoother, faster and more accurate.
Before you meet with your tax agent, organise key records such as:
✅ Income statements
✅ Bank interest and dividend statements
✅ Private health insurance details
✅ Receipts for work-related expenses
✅ Car logbook or kilometre records
✅ Work-from-home, phone and internet records
✅ Rental property and investment records
✅ ATO letters or notices
If you’re unsure whether something is claimable, bring the record anyway. Your tax agent can help review it and advise what applies to your situation.

Studying while working? Your course costs may be tax deductible — but only if your study is directly connected to your current job.
You may be able to claim self-education expenses if your study:
✅ Maintains or improves skills used in your current role
✅ Is likely to increase income from your current role
You generally can’t claim if the study is for a completely new career or profession, or if you’re not currently working in that field.
Eligible expenses may include course fees, textbooks, study materials, internet, phone, data, equipment decline in value, repairs, and travel to classes or seminars.
Keep receipts, use the ATO self-education expenses calculator, and only claim the work-related portion.

👓 Let’s help make this crystal clear!
Everyday prescription glasses are a private expense and aren’t tax deductible.
It's not about WHERE you wear them. It's about WHY you need them.
Prescription glasses help correct your vision, so they're considered a private expense rather than a work expense.
But, if you work outdoors and require protective sunglasses with a prescription, you may be able to claim a deduction 👇

🚨 Crypto Tax Alert – ATO Update
Crypto holders! The ATO is data-matching with exchanges and flagging incomplete reporting.
Remember: crypto is a CGT asset (not currency).
Swaps, staking rewards, airdrops & more are all taxable. Keep full AUD records for every transaction!
Read the official ATO guidance here:
Need help with your crypto tax? Message Doyen Chartered Accountants today.
That’s right!
👉 Crypto leaves a digital trail – especially when it connects with the real world, like using exchanges.
👉 Exchanges share information through data-matching, so activity can be traced.
And when you sell or dispose of crypto, a capital gains tax (CGT) event happens. This means you may need to report a capital gain or loss in your tax return.

Did you know laundry costs may be claimable on your tax return? 🧺
If you wear a proper uniform, protective clothing, or occupation-specific gear for work, you may be able to claim the cost of washing it.
But here’s the part many people miss: everyday clothing does not count — even if your employer requires you to wear it. Black pants, plain shirts, office suits, and general workwear usually won’t qualify unless they are part of a distinctive uniform, protective clothing, or occupation-specific clothing.
A few key things to remember:
✅ Claims of $150 or less may not need receipts
✅ You can use the cents-per-load method
✅ A simple 4-week laundry diary can help support your claim
❌ Everyday clothes generally are not deductible
❌ If total work-related expenses exceed $300, written evidence may be required
Small claims can add up, but they still need to be correct.
