One of the best things you can do to prepare your business for a future sale is also one of the best things you can do for it today.

Clean books. Consistent reporting. Accurate records. A financial history you can actually explain.

They help you understand performance, make better decisions and seek finance now. Later, they give potential buyers and advisers a much clearer picture of what they’re looking at.

You don’t need to be planning an exit to start building a more sale-ready business.

AI can be a brilliant bookkeeping assistant, we just wouldn’t make it CFO.

Use it to speed up repetitive work, and always double check any automated data input or suggestions.

Then keep a human involved where context, compliance and judgement matter.

The sweet spot isn’t AI or a bookkeeper. It’s knowing which jobs belong to which.

Super balance heading past $3 million? Division 296 is now law as of 1 July, and it works differently to the tax already sitting inside your fund.

It applies an extra 15% to the earnings linked to the portion above $3 million, and the calculation can capture growth you haven't even cashed in yet.

If your SMSF holds property or other illiquid assets, it’s worth reevaluating your strategies now so you’re not leaving money on the table.

Here's one plenty of businesses miss.

If you're in a TPAR industry but paid no contractors this year, the ATO may still expect to hear from you. A quick non-lodgment advice tells them there's nothing to report and saves you the follow-up letters.

Not sure if it applies to you? Book a free 20-minute call before 28 August.

TPAR season has a few classic traps, and most of them are avoidable with a quick records check.

Reporting net instead of gross, missing a one-off contractor, mixing up employees and contractors, or leaving out a payment with no ABN; each one can hold up your lodgment or invite ATO follow-up.

TPAR is due 28 August 2026.

If your business paid contractors to deliver services on your behalf this financial year, you may be required to lodge a Taxable Payments Annual Report with the ATO. That includes industries like building and construction, cleaning, courier and road freight, IT, and security.

Miss the deadline and the ATO can issue penalties. Skip the lodgment entirely and you're also giving the ATO a reason to look closer at your books.

If you're not sure whether TPAR applies to your business or your records aren't in order, now's the time to sort it.
