Budget night is officially wrapped, and I’ve waded through the paperwork so you don’t have to! ☕️📉
This year’s Federal Budget isn't just a few minor tweaks—it’s a massive structural shift in how we build wealth and run businesses in Australia. If you’re running a trade business or a medical practice, there are three things you need to be across before the new financial year kicks off:
1️⃣ The $20k Write-Off is here to stay! 🛠
From July 1, 2026, the $20,000 instant asset write-off is becoming a permanent fixture. This is huge for your cash flow.
2️⃣ The Trust Tax Trap 🩺
This is the one I’ll be talking to my clients about most. The government is introducing a minimum 30% tax on discretionary trusts starting in 2028. We have a window of time to review your structure. The "set and forget" days of trust distributions are ending.
3️⃣ The End of Negative Gearing (as we know it) 🏡
From July 1, 2027, negative gearing will be restricted to new builds only. Existing properties are grandfathered, but the 50% CGT discount is also being ditched for an inflation-based model. If established property is your retirement strategy, the rules of the game just changed.
What does this mean for YOU?
Honestly? It means "doing things the way we've always done them" isn't going to cut it anymore. Between the property shifts and the trust changes, your wealth strategy needs a 2026 update.
📲 I’ve broken down the full list—including the new $1,000 receipt-free deduction and FBT changes—over on the blog.
I’ve also put together a 2026 Budget Impact Checklist to help you see exactly where your business and family are exposed.
