Weekly Wrap-up –
- Amid escalating geopolitical tension and a rise in bond yield (nearly touched 5%), it appeared to weigh on sentiment and drive the major index in the U.S. to its most significant weekly decline in a month.
- The Treasury Department has been increasing its auction sizes for U.S. Treasury bills and notes, adding more government bonds to the market. Treasuries issued are expected to climb to over $3 trillion higher than any year in the last 10 years.
- The U.S. Federal Reserve chair signalled that the central bank could keep interest rates unchanged at its next policy meeting, which ends on November 1. However, he also warned that inflation is still too high, and he said that more rate hikes are still possible if economic data continues to come in stronger than expected.
Weekly Spotlights –
- As the Fed and central bank around the globe pause their rate hiking cycles and, over time, move rates lower, there are attractive opportunities in the current market for longer-dated investment-grade bonds.

Weekly Wrap-up –
- The S&P 500 retreated for the fourth week in a row, slipping to its lowest level in nearly four months as the increasing likelihood of a U.S. government shutdown has weighed on investor sentiment.
- Rising interest rates and concerns that tighter Fed policy will undercut the economy drove additional weakness in growth and small-cap investments, with the Nasdaq and S&P 500 indexes shedding close to 6% and 5%, respectively, for the month.
- The U.S. Federal Reserve's preferred gauge for tracking inflation rose at the slowest monthly pace since November 2020. The Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index rose at a 3.9% annual rate in August, excluding volatile food and energy prices.
Weekly Spotlights –
- Concerns about a U.S. government shutdown may add more pressure on global equity. Still, in our view, the favourable downturn in inflation over the past year, the notable resilience in consumer spending, and an approaching end to the Fed's rate hikes support the case for a sustainable uptrend in stocks and bond markets.

Weekly Wrap-up –
- The major U.S. index ended mixed as the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ posted overall gains for the first time in four weeks, but the Dow finished in negative territory. Investors seemed to react to mixed signals on the economy and the course of monetary policy.
- Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell indicated at his speech before the central bank’s annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, that the Fed is prepared to approve further interest-rate increases at some point but will “proceed carefully.” Powell cautioned that past increases haven’t yet fully cycled through the economy, and he indicated the Fed will await further economic data as it decides on the timing of any further hikes.
- Chinese stocks fell as investors grew more pessimistic with disappointing data, signs of deflation, record youth unemployment, and continued liquidity problems in the debt-laden property sector have contributed to an erosion of confidence in China’s economy.
Weekly Spotlights –
- Growth has stayed more resilient than most expected, though some downside remains as the rate hikes filter through the economy. We think policy rates are now at or nearing a peak. Within fixed income space, we see an opportunity to position for potentially lower yields next year by investing in longer-dated bonds.
