When people divorce, most of the focus goes on the family home.
Very little attention is paid to pensions.
Yet for many British expats in their 40s and 50s, a UK pension may be one of the largest assets they have built up.
Over the years, I have seen pensions traded away in order to keep the house, without fully understanding what that means for retirement. The real cost often shows up much later.
Divorce is emotional. But pension decisions last for decades.
In this weekโs Financial Fridays post, I explain how pensions are dealt with in England and Wales, and why expats need to approach this carefully.
It is worth a quick read if you or someone you know may be affected.

If youโre a British expat in the UAE and over pension age, youโve probably been told some version of this:
โDubai has no tax, so just take your UK pension.โ
That advice is not always wrong. It is just often incomplete.
In reality, outcomes are shaped by HMRC process, how pension trustees operate, and changes coming to UK Inheritance Tax from April 2027, not just the tax rate where you live.
Iโve shared a Financial Fridays article that explains where people get caught out, in plain English, without scare stories or sales pitches.
If you have a UK pension and value getting decisions right the first time, itโs worth a read.

Most British families in the UAE have life insurance arranged years ago in the UK.
It was set up for good reasons.
A home. Children. Peace of mind.
But when life changes, it is worth checking that your cover still does what you think it does.
This is a simple sense-check many expat families overlook.

If youโve got a UK pension sitting quietly back home, youโre not alone.
Many British expats in the UAE havenโt checked theirs in years.
But new rules mean some people will now have to wait longer to draw their pension โ and changes to inheritance tax could affect what your family receives too.
A quick review now could save a lot of stress later.

Interest rates change the way many of us manage our money.
When they move, your mortgage costs can shift, your savings may earn less, and your long-term plans can feel harder to judge.
The US Federal Reserve has cut rates again, which means the UAE will follow.
So what does this mean for your savings, your borrowing, and the goals you are working towards?
This weekโs Back to Basics post explains the changes in simple terms and shows how you can stay in control when interest rates move.

Many people have heard the term โalternative investmentsโ but are not always sure what it really means. Property, private companies, crypto, hedge funds, collectables and more. Each works in a different way and each carries its own risks.
This weekโs Financial Fridays post explains the main types in a simple and practical way. It also covers who these investments are designed for and why some of them are not available to everyday investors.
If you are a British expat in the UAE and want to understand how these options might fit into your wider plan, this guide is a great place to start.

Many people avoid shares because they feel uncertain or simply too busy to learn more. But shares are just small pieces of the real businesses we all use every day.
If you shop online, stream films, use a smartphone, or buy your morning coffee, you already support companies you could own.
Understanding how shares work helps your money grow without needing to follow the market each day.
This weekโs ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐: ๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ ๐๐ผ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ explains shares in simple terms and shows why they play such an important role in long-term wealth.
If the stock market has ever felt confusing, this will help make sense of it.

Most of us think of property as a flat, a villa, or a buy-to-let back home. But real estate as an investment is far bigger than that. It includes offices, warehouses, hospitals, airports and even data centres.
I explain what real estate really means for investors, how it makes money, and the hidden risks many people never consider.

But for many British expats in the UAE, that sense of security can be an illusion.
Inflation, currency movements, and even local banking rules can quietly erode the value, and sometimes even the accessibility of your savings.
